SSHRIMP FOR FREE TO THE PUBLIC

October 6, 2010 – 2:10 pm

As i read “free for all at fishmarket” - was there any law that permitted the prohibited fish or shrimp that have been confisticated for sale given away to public for free. It was quite a shock when the prohibited item given away for free especially to the public with the presence of law enforcement person around there, is that a correct procedure to handle the confisticated thing. Laws Of Brunei, Chapter 61, Fisheries 13 of 1972 if so forfeited, shall be disposed of in such manner as the Director of Fisheries may direct. Any fish seized by an Authorised Officer in accordance with the provisions of this Act may be sold forthwith, and the proceeds of sale thereof shall be held to abide the result of any prosecution or claim or, where there is no
prosecution or claim, shall be paid to the person from whom the fish was seized.

  2. Bravo Mohd Abd Rahman for bringing up this issue wich was truly amazing to read in today’s paper. Honestly speaking, reading that article, only sounded like we are either living in an uncivilized country or the enforcement officers were actually kindergarden students out for fun. It was totally ridiculous for such a thing to happen in modern days! We are not living in stone age.

  3. Brunei Law Enforcement team are so excited with the newly enforced law (tho not that new), ie. no-smoking in public… they are too busy catching all public-smokers and giving them fine that they tend to forget all other written Law of Brunei, and they think the public citizens are not aware of these Laws.. . Very typical Bruneian… Sekian.

  5. Read some comments that the shrimps are not safe. The shrimp is actually safe but it is the threaten species, just like the turtle eggs.

  6. I have several things to point out in relation to this issue, and I hope many would support what is commented here as majority supporters would undoubtedly lead to some action being done by the proper authorities:

1 - Watch this video link, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dm0ZqRimhu4 and then you will have an idea of how wrong and embarrassing this is.

2 - These prawns are ILLEGALLY IMPORTED by the people selling them. Therefore, it should be CONFISCATED and thrown out! The law, is the law. NO EXCEPTIONS!! IT SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN AWAY AS CHARITY!!

3 - Such activities are damaging to the future ECONOMY OF OUR COUNTRY. The fact is, we are trying to produce localized agricultural products and other products too in order for us to be less-dependent on importing goods from other countries. These businessmen are only thinking of making profits regardless of the consequences of their actions, to them their profits are more important! It’s bad enough that most of us Bruneians do our shopping in other countries, now we wanna make things worst by buying prawns from other countries and let our local prawns go to waste?

COME ON BRUNEIANS! WE LIVE IN THE SAME COUNTRY, LET’S TRY LIVING TOGETHER IN IT, UNITE AND REALIZE THAT WE NEED TO “MAJUKAN BANGSA, NEGARA DAN TANAHAIR KITA”!!

  9. I do not know of any businessmen who doesn’t want profit…. hahaha… and do you think we produce enough prawn that we can stop importing?

i just wonder how on earth did the illegal prawns passed custom during the importation?

  10. Mohd Abd Rahman - Thank you for your support and as a pioneer in voicing out this disturbing issue : )

akuni - Yes, I must agree that there are no businessmen who wouldn’t want unlimited and quick profits. BUT please bear in mind, we are living in a country which has rules and regulations. These stated rules and regulations are established in order to maintain some form of equality and fairness among the people living in the country and in this case, entrepreneurs.

In Brunei, we are to conduct businesses and generate profits following the the rules mentioned in this “Islamic business Ethics”, which directs entrepreneurs’ to go about their business in the right way, for example, by pricing their goods in the appropriate price range for the consumers, selling products which are of quality and halal state, making sure that if they generate maximum profits, some should go to deserving organisations.

And as for your question concerning whether or not we produce enough prawns locally to actually stop importing. Take it as a favor from me to you for promising to find out whether we have enough prawns locally. Soon enough, your question will be addressed okay?

    And the last question, on how they passed customs; I wouldn’t want to start an accusatory debate but custom officers are humans. You can’t really blame them for making mistakes. The fact still remains;

Our PROBLEM is - THE PRESENCE OF ILLEGALLY IMPORTED PRAWNS,
since we’ve discovered the problem, lets come together and make efforts in finding a SOLUTION - STOP THE ENTREPRENEURS FROM SELLING THESE PRAWNS IN OUR MARKETS (confiscate and destroy these prohibited prawns).

  11. cali! baru ani ku baca barutah perikanan kan ketatkan undang2 pengimportan seafood, jadinya batah2 ani bahapa durang? tidor? sudah buat silap baru tah kan sadar. in my view, local produce shrimp pun alum tantu meet the demand of local markets. bagi aku lah ah, boleh plang di import tapi be quota dan mesti di check oleh perikanan. mun pass barut ah di jual. cemana bulih pas kastam? may be jua ani adalah satu bisnes strategy to avoid bruneians mbali udang import. musykil. tau2 urang kaya kali punya, ia tah lapas. biasalah tu di brunei ani, yang kaya terkecuali. are we sure makanan seafood di brunei ani dapat dipantau kah? mun semua tah kan di ban, apa rasanya mun produk brunei kana ban diluar negeri? i know we have laws but in a sense kadang2 tepikir ku jua, its a little bit bias and we still pratice monopoly.
